The Peacock Effect: The Influence of the Opposite Sex on Aggressive Behavior

Most widely-accepted models for aggression do not explicitly address an important variable that roots in evolutionary psychology: the presence of a potential mate. The current research investigates whether the presence of an attractive or unattractive member of the opposite sex influences hypothetical aggression. Participants (N = 1035) imagined themselves in front of an attractive or non-attractive member of the opposite sex (accompanied by pictures of corresponding attractiveness levels), and indicate their aggressive intentions after a provocation, or not. Results from the 2(sex) x 2(attractiveness) ANOVA showed that males viewing an image of an attractive female aggressed more when provoked than males viewing a non-attractive female. These effects were absent for females

Quantum fluctuations in the spiral phase of the Hubbard model

We study the magnetic excitations in the spiral phase of the two--dimensional Hubbard model using a functional integral method. Spin waves are strongly renormalized and a line of near--zeros is observed in the spectrum around the spiral pitch ±Q\pm{\bf Q}. The possibility of disordered spiral states is examined by studying the one--loop corrections to the spiral order parameter. We also show that the spiral phase presents an intrinsic instability towards an inhomogeneous state (phase separation, CDW, ...) at weak doping. Though phase separation is suppressed by weak long--range Coulomb interactions, the CDW instability only disappears for sufficiently strong Coulomb interaction.Comment: Figures are NOW appended via uuencoded postscript fil

Zoll Metrics, Branched Covers, and Holomorphic Disks

We strengthen our previous results regarding the moduli spaces of Zoll metrics and Zoll projective structures on S^2. In particular, we describe a concrete, open condition which suffices to guarantee that a totally real embedding of RP^2 in CP_2 arises from a unique Zoll projective structure on the 2-sphere. Our methods ultimately reflect the special role such structures play in the initial value problem for the 3-dimensional Lorentzian Einstein-Weyl equations.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX2

    Space shuttle and life sciences

    Get PDF
During the 1980's, some 200 Spacelab missions will be flown on space shuttle in earth-orbit. Within these 200 missions, it is planned that at least 20 will be dedicated to life sciences research, projects which are yet to be outlined by the life sciences community. Objectives of the Life Sciences Shuttle/Spacelab Payloads Program are presented. Also discussed are major space life sciences programs including space medicine and physiology, clinical medicine, life support technology, and a variety of space biology topics. The shuttle, spacelab, and other life sciences payload carriers are described. Concepts for carry-on experiment packages, mini-labs, shared and dedicated spacelabs, as well as common operational research equipment (CORE) are reviewed. Current NASA planning and development includes Spacelab Mission Simulations, an Announcement of Planning Opportunity for Life Sciences, and a forthcoming Announcement of Opportunity for Flight Experiments which will together assist in forging a Life Science Program in space

Improving the quality of consent to randomised controlled trials by using continuous consent and clinician training in the consent process

Objectives: To assess whether continuous consent, a process whereby information is given to research participants at different stages in a trial, plus clinician training in that process was effective when used by clinicians gaining consent to the TOBY trial. The TOBY trial is a randomised controlled trial investigating the use of whole body cooling for neonates with evidence of perinatal asphyxia. Obtaining valid informed consent for TOBY is difficult; as such, it is a good test of the effectiveness of continuous consent. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 sets of parents who gave consent to TOBY and with 10 clinicians who sought it using the continuous consent process. Analysis focused on the validity of parental consent based upon the consent components of competence, information, understanding and voluntariness. Results: 19/27 (70%) couples had no significant problems with consent validity at the point of signature. Problems lay mainly with the parents’ competence and understanding. Mothers particularly had competence problems in the early stages of consent. The understanding problems were primarily to do with side effects. Problems in both areas (competence and understanding) reduced markedly, particularly for mothers, in the post signature phase when further discussion took place. Randomisation was generally understood but unpopular. Clinicians did not always give information in stages during the short period of time available before parents gave consent. However, most clinicians were able to give follow up information. Discussion: The consent validity compares favourably with similar trials examined in a comparable study (the Euricon study). Conclusion: Researchers should consider adopting elements of the continuous consent process and clinician training in RCTs, particularly where they have concerns about the quality of consent they are likely to obtain using a conventional process.</p

    Zoll Manifolds and Complex Surfaces

We classify compact surfaces with torsion-free affine connections for which every geodesic is a simple closed curve. In the process, we obtain completely new proofs of all the major results concerning the Riemannian case. In contrast to previous work, our approach is twistor-theoretic, and depends fundamentally on the fact that, up to biholomorphism, there is only one complex structure on CP2
